Molluscum Contagiosum Symptoms

Molluscum contagiosum symptoms are minimal as far as pain goes. The first sign is usually the appearance of a round, raised, bump that has a smooth surface. The bump has a waxy (or pearl-like) surface, and it may have an indentation in the center. Varying in size from a pinhead to as large as a quarter-inch across, the bump is firm and may itch occasionally.

While there may be only one molluscum contagiosum lesion, the average initial onset is at least five and up to 20 bumps (or lesions). There are, however, cases where the infection is more extreme due to the extent of exposure to the virus. The molluscum contagiosum virus is highly contagious, and when in contact with an infected source, it can spread quickly.

Even though molluscum contagiosum symptoms are more visual than physical (there is little discomfort associated with the bumps), it is important to eliminate the lesions to prevent the spread to other individuals or other areas of the body. It is also important to eliminate the potential scratching of the bumps, which could cause an infection to occur.
